Help Earthquake Survivors in Haiti

Haiti Relief and Recovery: What Now? The magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti has affected an estimated 3 million people, killed an estimated 200,000 and ranks among the worst natural disasters in recent history. Project Concern International (PCI) dispatched its Emergency Response Team to Haiti immediately following the earthquake. Within the first 30 days, PCI accomplished the following:
- Distributed essential urgently needed supplies such as hygiene kits, kitchen sets, jerry cans and shelter materials to over 3,000 families (20,000 people).
- Reached more than 60,000 patients in Port-au-Prince, Leogane, and Jacmel through the distribution of $6 million of vital emergency supplies, medicines, and medical equipment to hospitals, clinics, and other health providers with its alliance partner, AmeriCares.
- Is working with partners to help nearly 215,000 survivors address issues related to protection for women and children, economic recovery, water and sanitation, health, and shelters for the displaced.
How You Can Help Based on extensive and ongoing assessments by its trained field team over the past several weeks, PCI has identified 30 communities where it can make the most impact with an integrated package of services. In addition to temporary shelter, especially with rains coming soon, these communities are in need of neighborhood cleanup kits, neighborhood safe spaces for women and children, and mobile clinics with trained medical and social workers.

The need for your assistance and support far exceeds the resources we have, and we desperately need your help. Even small amounts of support will make a great impact. Your donation will ensure that we meet the essential needs of some of the most vulnerable people.
Here are some examples of how PCI can put your donation to work in the field:
- Shelter Kits for 4,000 families: critical materials to build temporary shelters that are safe, dry, and comfortable for families, including support and training to advance community reconstruction efforts. (Cost per family: $60)
- Community Cleanup Kits for 4,000 families: critical debris-clearing tools (shovel, pick, wheelbarrow) and safety apparel (gloves, hard hat, boots, face masks) to put jobless adults to work cleaning up their communities. (Cost per family: $100)
- Pit latrine: Materials and labor to construct one permanent latrine. (Cost per unit: $275)
- Neighborhood Safe Space Centers to provide structured activities and access to services for women and children in 30 communities, complete with recreational/educational activities, supplies and trained staffing. (Cost per center $500; 50 children each)
- Mobile Clinics in 30 communities, complete with medical supplies and equipment; vehicle and fuel; health promotion materials and signage; and specialty, multi-sectoral staff; designed to provide essential medical services to 200-400 families for one month. (Cost per clinic: $1,000)
Please give as generously as you can to help the victims of this earthquake - your support is urgently needed. (Taxpayers may deduct any cash donations made prior to March 1, 2010 in support Haiti earthquake relief efforts on their 2009 tax returns.)
