Disease prevention: Our Global Efforts to Fight Malaria

Combating malaria in IndonesiaMalaria causes up to three million deaths each year - that’s 1 death every 30 seconds. In many countries where PCI works, malaria is the biggest killer of children under five years of age. Tackling malaria in affected communities is fundamental to ensuring family and community health.

PCI’s malaria prevention efforts ensure cost-effective coverage and target people who are in great need, such as women who are pregnant; those persons with malaria and HIV/AIDS and/or tuberculosis; and those at special risk following a natural or man-made disaster.

Zambia
PCI’s programs in Zambia include promoting the use of insecticide-treated nets, providing training to health workers and caregivers, and dispensing anti-malarial medication to children on the streets. PCI’s malaria prevention efforts have been implemented in both the capital of Lusaka and rural areas of the country.

Ghana
PCI Ghana was involved in malaria policy and planning efforts at the national and regional levels, and participated on major malaria-related committees and task forces. PCI distributed 3000 insecticide treated bed nets to families there.

Indonesia
Following the December 2004 tsunami, PCI formed an alliance with a group in Banda Aceh and three international agencies that focused on malaria, medical assistance and livelihoods. PCI was able to distribute 2,100 family kits containing an insecticide treated tarp and other supplies along the west coast, providing support to approximately 11,000 beneficiaries.

PCI is also distributing nets in other areas of Indonesia, including five villages in Nabire in the district of Papua.

Nicaragua
Hurricane Felix, a category 5 hurricane, barreled ashore into the Tabsa Pri area of the RAAN in early September with 160 mph winds that left over 100 dead and tens of thousands without necessary food, water, sanitation facilities and shelter. In addition to meeting the immediate needs of hurricane victims by providing food, support, shelter, water and medical support, PCI is also partnering with the Against Malaria Foundation in order to disitrbute 3,500 nets to affected familes.
