Providing clean water and improving family health

Combating poverty in Tanzania

POPULATION: 41,048,532

ACTIVE IN: Manyara Region (13 Wards in Babati District)

PROGRAMS: Water & Sanitation

A CAUSE FOR CONCERN
In northern Tanzania’s Manyara Region, many communities have little or no access to clean water, which results in life-threatening illnesses such as cholera and diarrhea, as well as scabies, and trachoma. In addition, some parts of the region have been impacted by drought over the past five years, creating an unreliable water supply affecting both humans and cattle populations. Insufficient water for cattle has led to deterioration in livestock growth which is vital for local economy, health, and food security.

PCI’S PROJECT IS REHABILITATING OR CONSTRUCTING 120 WATER POINTS AND IS REACHING AT LEAST 30,000 PEOPLE THROUGH COMMUNITY MOBILIZATION AND BEHAVIOR CHANGE EDUCATION.

OVERVIEW

Project Concern International (PCI) began operations in Tanzania in 2008. In cooperation with its local implementing partner, ADRA Tanzania, and its collaborating partner, WaterAid Tanzania, PCI is implementing a comprehensive and sustainable water and sanitation and hygiene education program in the Manyara Region in the northeast region of the country designed to make a lasting impact in the health and well-being of Tanzanian families and communities.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT AND SOCIAL MOBILIZATION
In the Manyara Region of Tanzania, women and children can spend an average of 4-6 hours per day crossing great distances and waiting in long lines to obtain water. These long hours keep children particularly young girls, from attending school and women have no time to pursue other activities critical to socio-economic development. Crossing long distances to access water presents additional risks and dangers especially to women and children, including sexual assault and rape.

PCI’s Babati Health Through Water and Sanitation (BAHEWASA) project is designed to support the vulnerable communities the Babati District Council of Manyara through participation methods, low-cost technologies, and hygiene and sanitation education.

PCI is also advocating at a local government level to extend program services to an additional 15,000 people and trigger a school latrine-building program in the district.

In the past year, PCI also initiated a partnership with Globalbike to donate bicycles to the Village Water Committees established under the BAHEWASA project.
