WHY: The world water crisis is one of the most significant public health issues of our time. One-third of the Earth’s population lives in “water-stressed” countries and that number is expected to rise dramatically over the next two decades. Often water has to be carried long distances to the house which takes extraordinary time and effort, a burden borne mainly by women and children. PCI’s San Diego Walk for Water is inspired by the 3 - 6 mile journey women and children make every day to obtain water in order to ensure survival for their families. Participants in this 5K walk will be asked to carry water jugs in an effort to provide a symbolic and educational experience for the walker.
WHO: PCI has been working closely with a committee of high school students to plan and execute PCI’s San Diego Walk for Water. Many more San Diego students, along with their extended families and friends, are encouraged to participate in this 5K journey along Mission Bay Park to commemorate World Water Day, March 21, 2010 beginning at 10:00 am.
Can't make the event? If you can’t join us at Mission Bay the day of the walk, you can sign up to participate in your own 2010 Virtual Walk for Water and organize a 5K walk in your local community or neighborhood. Or if walking just isn’t an option for you, can support the San Diego Walk for Water by simply making a donation or giving a tribute gift in someone's honor to support PCI's efforts to provide developing communities in Tanzania with access to clean water. It’s up to you to choose the best way to participate – your support is needed and appreciated.
