Casa Materna
|
In Guatemala, indigenous families face poverty and challenging living conditions. Women and children are the most vulnerable, lacking access to basic education and health services, battling malnutrition and struggling against traditional prejudices that diminish their quality of life.
In 2000, Project Concern created the Casa Materna, which implements a variety of programs to reduce maternal and infant mortality. Women with high-risk pregnancies are referred to the Casa for care and monitoring during the final weeks of their pregnancies, and are then transferred to the neighboring district hospital in Huehuetenango for delivery. The Casa supports community education and networks of women's support groups. As a result, the Casa has literally saved the lives of hundreds of mothers and their babies and has contributed to the empowerment of thousands of other women and overall family health.
